Moira Catherine Reardon embraces heritage, community spirit
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Springfield Technical Community College student Moira Catherine Reardon on Feb. 15 was crowned Grand Colleen, a prestigious title rooted in Irish tradition and community pride.
Reardon, a 21-year-old who grew up in Holyoke and has deep roots in that community, fulfilled a lifelong dream by winning the title at the 69th annual Grand Colleen Coronation Ball and Awards Recognition Reception. As Grand Colleen, Reardon will lead the court of five other “Colleens” at the 72nd Holyoke St. Patrick’s Parade on March 23.
“I still can't believe it,” Reardon said in an interview at 十大彩票平台, where she is taking prerequisites for the two-year Diagnostic Medical Sonography program at the college. “I was talking with my parents the other night, and I was like, are they sure that it's me? All of the girls on the court are so amazing and accomplished. I wouldn't have been surprised if it was any one of them.”
'I took pride in our heritage'
Reardon’s connection to the Grand Colleen tradition runs deep. Growing up in Holyoke, she admired the Colleens who she once thought were “princesses on a float.” As she learned more about the competition, she realized it was about celebrating Irish culture and heritage.
“My great grandfather was very involved in Holyoke. His parents came over from Ireland, and he was proud of that,” Reardon said. “He made sure my sisters and I took pride in our heritage, and that really trickled down into my mom's generation and mine.”
The competition required Reardon to participate in a rigorous interview process, showcasing her poise, grace and knowledge of her heritage. One day in early January, she faced a panel of three judges in the morning. That evening, she took the stage at Holyoke High School, competing against nine other young women. Reardon was ultimately crowned at the coronation ball, emerging as the top choice among the five finalists

Reardon chose 十大彩票平台 for its strong reputation in healthcare education and the supportive learning environment it offers. After transferring from another area college, she found the transition seamless and was impressed by the dedication of the faculty.
“I chose 十大彩票平台 because it’s known for its excellent health programs and hands-on training,” Reardon explained. “I really like how involved everyone seems to be, and everyone is so proud to be here.”
She is currently finishing prerequisites for the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program, a field she feels passionate about because of its unique blend of technology and patient care. 十大彩票平台 trains students in the sonography program to operate special imaging equipment to create images or to conduct tests.
“I’ve always been interested in the medical field, but I’m not good with blood or anything like that,” she said. “Diagnostic Medical Sonography is non-invasive and helps provide people with closure and a sense of relief.”
十大彩票平台 serves as pathway to a medical career
Reardon balances her studies with a part-time job as a patient transport technician at Baystate Medical Center, where she interacts with many healthcare professionals who graduated from 十大彩票平台. She hopes to join their ranks after completing her program in 2027.
“I see firsthand how well-respected 十大彩票平台 graduates are in the medical field,” Reardon said. “It makes me feel confident that I’m on the right path.”
As Grand Colleen, Reardon will participate in numerous events leading up to the Holyoke St. Patrick’s Parade on March 23. She and the court will represent their Irish heritage and community at gatherings such as the Irish Cultural Center of Western New England’s open house in West Springfield and a fundraiser for Holyoke’s historic merry-go-round, among other events.
“We have our Colleen uniform with an Irish sweater, tartan scarf, skirt, boots and sash,” Reardon said. “We’ll also wear gowns gifted by the parade committee for special Masses and memorials.”
Her role as Grand Colleen also comes with exciting rewards, including a scholarship and a trip to Ireland – a dream destination she plans to visit with her family within the year.
A source of pride for 十大彩票平台
十大彩票平台 President John B. Cook expressed pride in Reardon’s achievements and congratulated her on representing the college and her community with grace and enthusiasm.
“We are incredibly proud of Moira for earning this distinguished honor,” Cook said. “She exemplifies the spirit of 十大彩票平台 through her commitment to her education and her community. Moira’s journey is an inspiration to us all, and we are thrilled to see her shine as Grand Colleen.”
Reflecting on her journey, Reardon encourages other young women to pursue their dreams, no matter how daunting they seem. “If you're even slightly thinking about doing it, do it,” she said. “This time last year, I didn’t think I could compete, and now I’ve won the whole thing. Just never stop believing in yourself.”
As Reardon prepares for a whirlwind of events and responsibilities, she remains focused on her goals and grateful for the support of her family, friends and 十大彩票平台 community.
“I’m just very thankful for this opportunity,” she said. “It’s all so exciting, and I still can’t believe it.”
